Our Legacy

Philip Meyer Attorneys Inc, established in 1980, is the oldest firm in White River. The late Philip Meyer purchased the practice in February 1980 and founded Philip Meyer Attorneys.

As a long-serving attorney and property developer, Philip shaped the physical and legal landscape of White River. His career spanned 36 years of service before his passing in 2016.

Today, his legacy continues under the leadership of his daughter, Marisa Meyer, who took over the firm in 2016 — evolving the firm to a forward-thinking, female-led practice.

Philip Meyer - The Legacy

In February 1980, the late Philip Meyer purchased the law firm and founded Philip Meyer Attorneys

He had a keen interest in property and alongside the law firm contributed to the development of White River.

In 1981, the Kingsview suburb was developed. Philip played a key role as a sub-contractor, supplying all reticulation work. That same year, he founded an estate agency, United Properties, and opened a branch office for the United Building Society.

As the Practice expanded, it relocated in 1982 from the main road to a larger premises stretching from William Lynn Street to Kruger Park Street, making space for both the growing Practice and the United Building Society.

In 1986, Philip expanded the property division of the practice. He acquired and rezoned farmland, today known as Colts Hill, and oversaw the installation of services to create much-needed housing for the White River community.

He also launched another estate agency, Glaskas Properties, which led to a further expansion of the firm’s premises, including space let to CNA and a new United Building Society banking hall.

By 1987, Philip had established a third estate agency, White River Properties. Together with draughtsman Jimmy Reed and his father-in-law Philip Pretorius, he went on to build several houses for new owners in Colts Hill.

An agency for Natal Building Society was also established by Philip during this time.

In 1992, Philip was involved with stage two of the Colts Hill development.

Philip was also passionate about the social development of the community.  In 1993, he became involved in local municipal affairs. He actively participated in the local elections and was voted chairperson of the National Party, first for Nelspruit area and later for the Lowveld region. During the transitional period of the local municipalities in 1994,  he spent many hours contributing to the develop of the new structures.

In 1994, a large parcel of land on the corner of Danie Joubert Street and the now known extension of Impala Street, was acquired, rezoned and divided into one hectare plots and sold.

In 1994, a new block flats, The Village, was developed and sold under sectional title.

1994 – This was followed by the purchase of the plot known as Annalta, which involved a portion of empty land and 6 adjoining small properties. A block of 22 flats were built as well as two small houses. The balance of the houses was revamped. The whole complex was later sold under sectional title.

Concurrently, the next development, Varing Hof comprising 14 units was undertaken.

In 1995, Philip was elected as councilor of White River in 1995 in which role he served until 2000. He was offered the position of Chairman of the Regional Services Council, but declined since he did not want to give up his Practice.

From 1996, the focus of the Practice shifted from property development to litigation, focusing on Road Accident Fund claims and Medical Negligence.

Philip served as Mayor of White River during 1996. He served on both the Townships Board and the Housing Tribunal both as member and chairman until 2012. He continued to be involved in the training of councilors all over Mpumalanga in property matters until 2014.

In 1997, Philip constructed the multi-story building in Kruger Park Street, which housed ABSA as well as the Practice.

During this time housing projects namely Garden Villas (12 units) and Garden Court (10 units) were developed on the corner of Danie Joubert and Kiaat Streets in White River.

In 1998, Philip sold his share in the ABSA office block and the Practice relocated to a premises in the Spar Centre in White River, where the Practice was located until the end of 1999.

Having purchased sections 1 and 2 of the Peter Hof complex, the Practice relocated to its current premises in December 1999.

Throughout his career, Philip understood and valued the importance of training and development of the community. He bought a franchise to train paralegal personnel, which he managed from 1999 until 2011.  The Practice was the first to train non-white attorneys in the Lowveld and regularly enrolled candidate attorneys, many of whom became senior attorneys in the Lowveld.

In 2001, Philip was instructed by the Mbombela Transitional Council to formalise the township known as Hills View, title deeds were created and 47 properties were transferred.

In 2005, 12 Stelia Hof flats were bought, registered under the sectional title regulations and sold.

During 2006, the development, rezoning and sub-division of the suburb Waterkant was under way.  In 2007, the second phase of Waterkant was completed and during 2008, Phase 3 of Waterkant was completed bringing the total of stands developed and sold to 180.

The final development that Philip conducted is known as Fairlands, an extension of the suburb in Danie Joubert Street. Philip sold his share in 2010.

Philip was passionately involved in the Practice until his passing in October 2016.

Philip Meyer leaves a lasting legacy through his contribution to the development of the town whereby he changed the footprint of White River forever.  He was posthumously publicly recognized for his forward thinking mindset and contribution to the training and development of legal practitioners and the legal fraternity by the Judge President of the High Court, Mbombela.

Today, the boutique law firm continues to grow under the leadership of his daughter Marisa Meyer
